NORA Healthcare and Social Assistance Sector Council

NORA Healthcare and Social Assistance Council Banner

The NORA Healthcare and Social Assistance Council brings together individuals and organizations to share information, form partnerships, and promote adoption and dissemination of solutions that work. It was formed in 2006 for the second decade of NORA. Now in the third decade (2016-2026) the council seeks to facilitate the most important research, understand the most effective intervention strategies, and learn how to implement those strategies to achieve sustained improvements in workplace practice. Meetings and News

The NORA Healthcare and Social Assistance Council is currently working to update the Healthcare and Social Assistance Agenda for the third decade of NORA. It will be available for public comment later in 2017.

Sector/Cross-Sector Description

There are more than 21 million workers covered by the NORA Healthcare and Social Assistance sector, with jobs that fall under three major NAICS codes. This sector includes doctors, dentists, nurses and other medical professionals, as well as social assistance such as child care and community housing, food and relief services. Healthcare and social assistance are grouped together because many organizations provide a mix of healthcare and social assistance. Because of the many similarities between healthcare and animal healthcare, this sector also includes workers engaged in veterinary medicine and animal care (VM/AC) in settings other than food production. Examples of industries that employ VM/AC workers include veterinary services, pet care services, zoos and botanical gardens, academic institutions, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and others. Workers in the healthcare and social assistance industries face many occupational health and safety issues, including musculoskeletal disorders, infectious diseases, violence, and exposure to hazardous drugs and other chemicals.
