In 1992, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) initiated the Great Lakes Human Health Effects Research Program to characterize exposure to contaminants via consumption of Great Lakes fish, and investigate the potential for short- and long-term adverse health effects.

Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science (IOM/NAS) Reviews Great Lakes Drafts
At the request of the CDC, an IOM/NAS committee conducted a review of the ATSDR drafts regarding hazardous substances in the twenty-six U.S. Great Lakes Areas of Concern.
