State Partners

Seven states contributed data to NTSIP from 2010 through 2012. If a spill occured within one of those states, the health department collected information about the spill i.e. what was spilled and where it happened. They also collected information about whether any people were harmed. Federal agencies and their partners can use this information to learn more about reducing harm caused by toxic substances.

Health departments in these states also mapped the locations of toxic substances. This includes places that toxic substances are made, stored, used, and transported in the states. Collecting this data helped point out safer ways to manage toxic substances and to more effectively reach out to communities and industries to increase safety and promote a cleaner environment.

National Toxic Substance Incidents Program (NTSIP) State Trainings

Background: NTSIP is a program within the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. This course was designed for state and local health and safety personnel who want to collect data on acute chemical incidents and their public health impacts for preparedness and prevention efforts using the NTSIP tools.

The course will take approximately 50 to 60 minutes to complete. There are two modules. The estimated time for each module is presented below. This course is self-paced, meaning you can review the information in this course in as much time as you need. There are optional quizzes at the end of each module to test your understanding of the materials. Complete the course parts in the order presented.

Part I State Surveillance online training for the National Toxic Substance Incidents Program (NTSIP)
estimated completion time is 35 to 40 minutes The objectives of Part I are to familiarize you with NTSIP state surveillance activities, describe the definition of a NTSIP event, the process for determining event eligibility, and the NTSIP data tools available to assist you with understanding the intricacies surrounding this program. At the end of the module, there will be a short quiz to help you test yourself about the topics we have covered.

Part II State Surveillance online training for the National Toxic Substance Incidents Program (NTSIP)
estimated completion time is 15 to 20 minutes The objectives of Part II are to become familiar with the NTSIP data entry process and next steps, including how to download your individual state data, analyze it, and use it for outreach activities to prevent common types of releases and improve emergency response. At the end of the module, there will be a short quiz to help you test yourself about the topics we have covered.
