Chemicals Found

Levels of manganese in East Liverpool air samples exceeded comparison values. This means that the levels were high enough that they could cause health problems for some people. Manganese levels in East Liverpool do not necessarily represent a heath threat to residents, but they do indicate the need for further investigation.

Levels of all other metals were unlikely to cause harm. We found that arsenic, cadmium, and chromium air concentrations were not detected at levels much different from normal (or background) levels for most communities.

Community residents are also concerned about cancer risks from air pollution. Ohio EPA found chromium in the air but the U.S. EPA National Enforcement Investigation Center (NEIC) found that it is not the form of chromium that causes cancer.
