Oak Ridge Reservation

Public Health Activities by Facility

Historical Document

This Web site is provided by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) ONLY as an historical reference for the public health community. It is no longer being maintained and the data it contains may no longer be current and/or accurate.

X-10

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL); Formerly known as Clinton Laboratories - X-10 Facility Time Line [PDF, 58 KB]
  • Iodine-131 Releases
ATSDR scientist evaluated whether past air releases of iodine 131 (I-131) from the production of radioactive lanthanum (RaLa) at the X-10 site could have harmed people living near the Oak Ridge Reservation. (May 2008)
  • White Oak Creek - Radionuclide Releases
ATSDR scientists present their evaluation of potential exposures to White Oak Creek radionuclide releases via the Clinch River and the Lower Watts Bar Reservoir. (August 2006)
  • Contaminated Off-Site Groundwater
ATSDR scientists evaluated potential exposures to contaminated off-site groundwater coming from the X-10 site, the Y-12 plant, and the K-25 site. (August 2006)
  • Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Releases
ATSDR scientists evaluated exposure to PCBs released from all three facilities at the Oak Ridge Reservation. (March 2009)

Y-12

Y-12 National Security Complex - Y-12 Plant Time Line [PDF, 58 KB]
  • Y-12 Uranium Releases
ATSDR evaluated past and current exposure to uranium released from the Y-12 plant and found that the off-site exposures to uranium were too low to be a health hazard for either radiation or chemical health effects. (January 2004)
  • Y-12 Mecury Releases
ATSDR scientists conducted a public health assessment to evaluate off-site residents’ exposure to Y-12 plant-related mercury from 1950 to 2009.
  • East Fork Poplar Creek
ATSDR conducted two health consultations on East Fork Poplar Creek evaluating public health issues of concern to the community bordering the creek.

K-25

East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP); Formerly known as Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant - K-25 Facility Time Line [PDF, 208 KB]
  • K-25 and S-50 Uranium and Fluoride Releases
ATSDR scientists evaluated the potential health effects of past K-25 and S-50 air releases of radioactive and nonradioactive hazardous substances for people living in nearby, off-site communities. (September 2010)
  • Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Incinerator
ATSDR found that the TSCA Incinerator releases very small amounts of contaminants into the environment, but the amounts are far below levels associated with health effects. (December 2005)
  • Contaminated Off-Site Groundwater
ATSDR scientists evaluated potential exposures to contaminated off-site groundwater coming from the X-10 site, the Y-12 plant, and the K-25 site. (August 2006)
  • Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) Releases
ATSDR scientists evaluated exposure to PCBs released from all three facilities at the Oak Ridge Reservation (March 2009)

Oak Ridge Reservation Overall

  • Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES)
The Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee was created to provide a forum for communication and collaboration between citizens and public health agencies.
  • Current and Future Chemical Exposures Evaluation
ATSDR scientists evaluated potential current and future chemical exposures for people living in the vicinity of the Oak Ridge Reservation. (January 2007)
  • Assessment of Cancer Incidence in Counties Adjacent to Oak Ridge Reservation
ATSDR scientists evaluate cancer incidence rates in eight counties surrounding the Oak Ridge Reservation, and assess how the incidence rates for each county compare to Tennessee state cancer incidence rates. (October, 2006)
  • Watts Bar Reservoir
ATSDR staff members conducted a health consultation, a community and physician education program, and an exposure investigation in response to health concerns of residents living in the area of the Watts Bar Reservoir.
  • Epidemiology Workshops
Overview of the science of epidemiology.
  • Other ATSDR Public Health Activities
In addition to conducting health consultations and public health assessments, ATSDR used other systematic public health approaches such as technical consultation, and community and physician education to address and evaluate public health issues related to chemical and radioactive substances released from the Oak Ridge Reservation.
