Reporting and Surveillance

Information on cases and outbreaks of adenovirus infection is collected in the United States using two surveillance systems:

• National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS): a passive, voluntary, laboratory-based surveillance system that has included adenovirus reporting since 1989. This system is used to track the number of adenovirus tests that are done and the proportion that are positive, by specimen type, location, and when they were collected. Serotyping, demographic data, and clinical data are not reported.
• National Adenovirus Type Reporting System (NATRS): a passive, voluntary, laboratory-based system that collects basic data on specimens that are positive for human adenovirus, including type. NATRS has been collecting data since 2014.
