CDC Vital Signs Director

Richard A. Schieber has been the Director of CDC’s Vital Signs program since 2010. Vital Signs calls scientists, public health and medical professionals, policy makers, and the general public to action on an important public health topic each month. Vital Signs is based on the latest CDC data available, and its monthly reports are viewed by millions.

Dr. Schieber attended Northwestern University in Chicago, completing a combined BS-MD program. He is board-certified in general pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, and pediatric critical care medicine. He joined the Epidemic Intelligence Service in 1992 and earned a master’s degree in public health from Emory University in 1995. He has experience working in university practice, private practice, federal government, county public health, and advocacy groups.

Dr. Schieber began the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Division at Emory University in 1985, and served as its first Division Director and the Medical Director of the pediatric intensive care unit.

At CDC, Dr. Schieber has been a leader in childhood injury prevention, seasonal influenza vaccination of children, and situation awareness. He was the first CDC Senior Advisor for Pandemic Influenza from 2005 to 2006. He also served as the Team Lead for the Community Mitigation Task Force for the pandemic influenza emergency in 2009-2010.

Dr. Schieber is passionate about developing multidisciplinary working teams to solve major public health problems and about mentoring mid-career scientists.
