Overview: University of Maryland, Baltimore Epicenter brings together a team of investigators from the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Veterans Affairs Maryland Healthcare System, and Indiana University. Research will examine novel ways to reduce transmission of infectious germs and to improve the effectiveness of personal protective equipment. The research team has extensive experience in infectious disease epidemiology, clinical medicine, health economics, behavioral science, medical informatics, occupational health, and gerontology.
Research Study Areas:
- Perform a multi-site ICU study to determine which patient factors and which healthcare workers interactions lead to greater risk of transmitting germs in both acute and long term care settings
- Perform a randomized trial to determine alternative approaches to improve compliance with glove use and hand hygiene during patient care
- Determine which patient factors and which healthcare workers interactions lead to greater risk of transmitting germs in a multi-site study of community based nursing homes
- Evaluate the role of personal protective equipment (PPE) decontamination after use
