Health Impact Assessment
A Health impact assessment (HIA) is "...a combination of procedures, methods, and tools by which a policy, program, or project may be judged as to its potential effects on the health of a population, and the distribution of those effects within the population."
See 1999 Gothenburg consensus statement, available at: http://www.impactsante.ch/pdf/HIA_Gothenburg_consensus_paper_1999.pdf [PDF - 138 KB]. HIA can evaluate objectively the potential health effects of a project or policy before it is built or implemented. HIAs can be conducted on food system strategies, policies, projects that will affect the food system, and people’s ability to access health food.
