CDC Science Clips: Volume 8, Issue 22, May 31, 2016

Each Tuesday, to enhance awareness of emerging scientific knowledge, selected science clips will be posted here for the public health community. The focus is applied public health research and prevention science that has the capacity to improve health now.

This Science Clips feature focuses on the science supporting sodium reduction. Sodium increases blood pressure, and high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, two leading causes of death in the United States. The totality of scientific evidence supports lowering sodium consumption from current levels. In light of the overwhelming body of credible, high-quality scientific evidence, sodium reduction is an achievable, effective, and critically important public health strategy to reduce blood pressure and prevent heart attacks and strokes. This Science Clips features some of the key scientific papers that highlight the importance of population wide sodium reduction. Papers include scientific studies and analyses of dietary sodium as it relates to blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and stroke), other health outcomes, and health care costs, as well as a few key papers on blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. For more information about each of these papers, please click this link for The Science Behind Sodium Reduction, Scientific Abstracts Highlighting the Importance of Sodium Reduction  by Aburto NJ, Ziolkovska A, Hooper L, et al.
