Reduction in Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections Among Patients in Intensive Care Units – Pennsylvania, April 2001-March 2005

This report from hospitals in southwestern Pennsylvania suggests that major reductions in healthcare associated infections can be achieved in a wide variety of hospitals, and that collaboration among hospitals in a region might be an effective way to approach prevention strategies.

This report describes the experience of 32 hospitals in southwestern Pennsylvania that participated in a regional patient safety intervention and reduced bloodstream infections (BSI) rates by nearly 70 percent over a 4-year period. This observation provides evidence that major reductions in central line-associated BSI rates can be achieved in hospital intensive care units of varying types. It also shows that coordinated infection control initiatives among healthcare facilities in a region may be an effective approach to reducing healthcare-associated infections.

Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule – United States, October 2005 – September 2006

This schedule (dated October 2005-September 2006) should replace the Adult Immunization Schedule issued last year and the recommendations can be implemented by all U.S. healthcare providers.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) annually reviews the recommended Adult Immunization Schedule to ensure that the schedule reflects current recommendations for the use of licensed vaccines in the U.S. In June 2005, ACIP approved the Adult Immunization Schedule for October 2005-September 2006. This schedule has also been approved by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The 2005-2006 schedule offers an improved format, and reflects changes in ACIP recommendations for varicella, influenza, and meningococcal vaccines.
