Student Programs

The CDC Undergraduate Public Health Scholars (CUPS) program consists of six internship opportunities creating a public health workplace experience to increase student interest in minority health.

Both CUPS students and fellows with the Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program will start their summer experience with a visit to CDC’s Atlanta campus for a three-day orientation. The event will include a series of group discussions, information exchanges, and innovative learning opportunities that introduce students to CDC’s priorities, current public health initiatives, and emerging public health issues at the federal level.

CUPS participants spend the summer working on assigned projects that range from the study of social determinants of health, such as sociocultural factors related to HIV prevention among gay and bisexual men in the United States, to public health reporting focused on data and analysis.

Collegiate Leaders in Environmental Health (CLEH)
The National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) in Atlanta, Georgia invites rising collegiate juniors and seniors to apply for this paid 10-week summer internship. Undergraduate students that are passionate about the environment, about health, and about the link between the two will be paired with mentors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to gain experience in the fascinating field of Environmental Public Health. Students will receive a stipend of ~$620 per week to cover living expenses and other basic needs. More

American Society for Microbiology (ASM) / CDC Program in Infectious Disease and Public Health Microbiology
The goal of the program is to support the development of new approaches, methodologies and knowledge in infectious disease prevention and control in areas within the public health mission of the CDC. More

DHPE’s Internship Program offers a unique internship opportunity to prepare students of federally designated minority-serving institutions (MSIs) to apply academic skills and problem-solving to real-life work experiences while the public health programs they serve gain vitality and fresh perspectives from future leaders. CDC/ the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) Applied Epidemiology Fellowship
The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) are accepting applications for the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship Program, which trains recent graduates in the field of applied epidemiology. During a two-year assignment, participating fellows develop applied epidemiologic skills during a high quality, mentored training experience in order to prepare them for a long-term career at the state or local level. While the program provides rigorous training for its participants, it is also designed with flexibility in order to meet the particular interests of the fellows. The fellowship program is designed for recent master’s or doctoral level graduates in epidemiology or a related field who are interested in the practice of public health at the state or local level. Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (APHIF)
The Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (APHIF) trains recent graduates in the expanding field of applied public health informatics. Participating Fellows will receive one year of on-the-job training at a state or local health agency under the guidance of experienced mentors. The goal of the Fellowship is to provide a high quality training experience and to secure long-term career placement for Fellows at the state or local level. APHIF is supported by the Association of the State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), and the Public Health Informatics Institute (PHII), otherwise known as the SHINE (Strengthening Health Systems through Interprofessional Education) partners. Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) / CDC Student Ambassador Program
The TMCF Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Internship Program is designed to not only increase interest in public health as a career, but also to increase interest in the CDC among students who do not have a science background and thus, may not have ever considered the CDC as a great place to work. An extremely large agency, the CDC, like any major corporation, requires the talents and skills of individuals from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. More

White House Initiative on Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Internships
Opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to gain experience in research, writing, coordination and outreach. Part-time and full-time internships during spring and fall semesters and full-time internships during the summer. More

Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program (JRCOSTEP)
Allows students to gain valuable professional experience with the Public Health Service (PHS) early in their education. They serve in assignments throughout the country during their official school breaks for periods from 31 to 120 days. More

NIH has internships, awards, and other programs for students from high school through graduate school in a variety of health fields. More

Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program
Administered by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the MARC Program increases the number of minority students in biomedical research by providing special research and training opportunities. More

American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Internship Program
A 10-week summer program that provides qualified AISES students with internship opportunities to explore potential federal service careers with select agencies. More

Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program (HNIP)
As the largest Hispanic internship program in the nation, HACU/HNIP has placed over 7,600 college students in rewarding and challenging internships matching their majors and career goals. It provides a vital opportunity to address the historic under-representation of Hispanics/Latinos in the Federal government and many career fields. More

Hispanic Serving Health Professions Schools (HSHPS) Training Programs
HSHPS offers several paid training programs conducted across the United States and Latin America in government agencies and academic institutions. Most of the HSHPS trainees will work alongside other students sponsored by other nonprofit organizations in a government setting or students from the host institution. More
