In 2004, a total of 25,655 fetal deaths at >20 weeks gestation were reported in the United States, nearly as many as infant deaths (27,860). The U.S. fetal mortality rate was 6.20 per 1,000 live births and fetal deaths. The fetal mortality rate for non-Hispanic black women (11.25) was approximately twice the rates for non-Hispanic white (4.98), American Indian/Alaska Native (5.84), Asian/Pacific Islander (4.77), and Hispanic women (5.43).
