Overview of the Birth Defects Surveillance Toolkit
The Birth Defects Surveillance Toolkit serves as a resource for those looking to establish or enhance a surveillance programme for birth defects. It provides an overview of the purpose and importance of these types of programmes, and serves as a companion for planning, implementing, and evaluating a programme. The toolkit is a collaborative effort between the:
- International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research (ICBDSR),
- National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
- World Health Organization (WHO).
How to Use the Surveillance Toolkit
- Get an overview of each chapter from the Birth Defects Surveillance: A Manual for Programme Managers by visiting the chapter summary pages where you can find a chapter description, contents, and features that supplement the information presented. Begin with the Chapter 1 Summary page.
- Click through pages in the Chapters and Appendices sections to see what is in the manual.
- Use the Photo Atlas to view photographs, descriptions, and ICD-10 classification codes of birth defects reflected in the manual to assist programme staff in diagnosing and coding birth defects.
- Explore the Facilitator’s Guide for training programme staff on the best practices for establishing a birth defects surveillance programme, and diagnosing and coding birth defects. This guide was developed and revised based on the implementation and evaluation of a training course provided in several countries.
