Health Statistics Day 2018
The Health Statistic Day (HSD) workshop was organized in 2016 as an outreach activity to provide high school students with the opportunity to learn about the importance of higher education in statistical sciences in public health and various professions. Along with their teachers, about 30 juniors and seniors from two local high schools participated in the one-day workshop.
The HSD 2018 workshop will be an exciting opportunity for high-achieving high school students who are considering pursuing college degrees in the sciences, including mathematics, computer science, and data science. Students will learn about how the field of statistical sciences applies to public health monitoring and will hear about career opportunities from the country’s leading health statistical agency, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
This one-day workshop will include an introductory presentation by NCHS’ Director, followed by hands-on group activities conducted by NCHS’ statisticians, epidemiologists, and health and computer scientists. While topics for HSD 2018 are still being developed, HSD 2016 topics included vital statistics data, statistical inference, health disparities, and applications to nutrition and environmental exposure.
