Healthy People is an innovative health promotion-disease prevention initiative coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Over the past 3 decades Healthy People has provided science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of Americans. From its inception there has been international interest in developing similar health objectives for a number of other countries. NCHS Healthy People staff, who are responsible for coordinating and managing data used to monitor the Nation's progress toward objective targets, have consulted with a number of countries on development and monitoring of health objectives. Among these are: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Ecuador, Japan, Netherlands, South Korea, along with the US-Mexico Border Health Commission. The decades of experience in the US in developing and monitoring health objectives has enabled NCHS to make important contributions to similar activities in other countries. In addition to the work on health objectives, NCHS Healthy People staff has consulted on international activities to develop summary measures of population health, which have been part of Healthy People since the mid-1990s. Currently, NCHS is consulting with the European Union on the European Health and Life Expectancy Information System (EHLEIS) which is developing measures of healthy life expectancy that can be produced for all 27 member nations. EHLEIS meetings took place in 2012 and 2013 and are planned for 2014 and, possibly 2015.
