Worktable 26 lists the death rates and age-adjusted death rates per 100,000 population for Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and detailed subcategories. Age-adjusted death rates are used to compare relative mortality risks across groups and over time; they are indexes rather than direct measures. Age-adjusted death rates are standardized to the standard population (U.S. population distribution for 1940). Death rates are tabulated by 10-year age group, race, and sex. HIV infection is a rankable cause but is not included in the NCHS standard short tabulation lists for mortality (the 72 cause list and the 282 cause list).
