TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
Water spray, foam, powder, carbon dioxide
EXPLOSION Above 57.8°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 57.8°C use a closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE

•INHALATION Cough. Sore throat. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN Redness. Pain.
Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
•EYES Causes watering of the eyes. Redness. Pain.
Safety goggles
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Burning sensation. Abdominal pain.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
On combustion, forms. toxic gases including hydrogen chloride , nitrogen oxides and phosgene . Reacts violently with strong oxidants. Attacks rubber and some forms of plastic .

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 2 ppm as TWA (ACGIH 2006).
MAK: IIb (not established but data is available)

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by ingestion and by inhalation of its vapour.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C; on spraying or dispersing, however, much faster.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is irritating to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of vapours may cause lung oedema (see Notes).

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Boiling point: 124°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.4
Solubility in water: very poor
at 20°C
Vapour pressure, kPa at 20°C: 2
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 5.0
Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20°C (air = 1): 1.0
Flash point: 57.8°C c.c.
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 1.56

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S

Ethide is a trade name. Environmental effects from the substance have not been investigated. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential.
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-G1GT1-II
NFPA Code: H2; F2; R3;
Card has been partially updated in August 2007: see GHS classification.
