TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION

FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Combustible under specific conditions. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!

•INHALATION
Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest.
•SKIN
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
•EYES Redness. Pain.
Safety goggles, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
WHITE OR COLOURLESS CRYSTALS.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating above 102°C, producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides ; on contact with acidsproducing carbon disulfide;andon contact with wateror moistureproducing toxic gases .

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly on dispersion.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization.

PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES

Melting point (decomposes): 104-105°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.3
Solubility in water, g/100 ml at 20°C: 0.3
Flash point: 93°C
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 1.4

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to plants. Avoid release to the environment in circumstances different to normal use.

N O T E S

The technical grade is 98% pure; dazomet is moderately stable but is sensitive to temperature > 35°C and to moisture. If the substance is formulated with solvent(s) also consult the card(s) (ICSC) of the solvent(s). Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties.
