ELEMENTS OF ERGONOMICS PROGRAMS

Step 2: Involve and Train Management and Workers

Understand the purpose of ergonomics training

Ergonomics training would be beneficial for all workers exposed to conditions that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Employees know their own jobs better than anyone else does. Workers must be given the opportunity to discuss problems as they see them. Management and workers need to understand ergonomics if they are to correctly identify and solve workplace MSD problems. Ergonomics training enables managers, supervisors, and employees to identify the risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), recognize the signs and symptoms of WMSDs, and develop strategies that reduce and prevent WMSDs.

Choose at least one type of ergonomics training

Table 2.1: Types of Ergonomics Training

Type of training Objectives
Ergonomics Awareness Training (should be provided to most employees)
  1. Learn how to recognize the risk factors for WMSDs
  2. Learn how to recognize symptoms of WMSDs
  3. Understand general methods for reducing risk factors for WMSDs
  4. Become aware of your company’s health care procedures
  5. Learn your employer’s role in addressing and controlling risk factors for WMSDs
  6. Learn how workers can address risk factors for WMSDs
  7. Learn how to report your concerns of WMSDs
Training in Job Analysis and Control Measures (common for ergonomics team members)
  1. Learn how to conduct a job analysis
  2. Learn how to implement and evaluate control measures
Training in Problem Solving (required for working in hazard control problem solving groups)
  1. Develop skills in team building, consensus development, brainstorming and problem-solving
  2. Learn how to synthesize ideas from employees, management, and other affected parties

Tailor ergonomics training to the target audience. Consider their education level, literacy level, language, and specific job interests. Make any outside instructors aware of company operations, relevant policies, and practices before training begins, so the training is relevant to the work performed at the facility.
