NOHSS Child Indicators – 2007

Methods for State Oral Health Surveys that began data collection in 2007

Updated January 21, 2015

Alaska

The survey was completed during the 2007-2008 school year. The sampling frame consisted of on-site elementary schools with a kindergarten and/or 3rd grade enrollment of 10 or more (correspondence and distance education schools were not included in the sampling frame). A probability proportional to size sampling scheme with implicit stratification by free and/or reduced lunch program eligibility was employed to select 32 schools. Nine trained screeners completed the screenings using diagnostic criteria comparable to ASTDD's 1999 Basic Screening Survey. Of the students selected, 48% responded. The data were self-weighting and the estimates presented are not adjusted for nonresponse.

Louisiana

The survey was conducted during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years. The sampling design consisted of a probability-proportional-to-size sample of public and private elementary schools stratified by health region, by public/private school status within health region, in some cases by large parish, and school free/reduced lunch eligibility percentage. Seventy-five schools participated in the survey. All 3rd grade children who returned a positive consent form were eligible to participate. The statewide response rate was 42 percent. The survey followed the methods outlined in ASTDD's Basic Screening Survey. Examiners were trained and calibrated. In the state, 65% of schoolchildren are eligible for the free/reduced lunch program (FRL); among students attending schools in the sample, 61% were eligible for FRL. The data were weighted to account for the survey design and nonresponse.

Oklahoma

The survey was conducted during the 2007-2008 school year. A probability sample of public and private elementary schools with at least 5 students enrolled in third grade was obtained. Thirty-six schools participated in the survey. All 3rd grade children in the school were eligible to participate if they returned a positive consent form. The statewide response rate was 46 percent. The survey followed the methods outlined in ASTDD's Basic Screening Survey. The screenings were completed by three dentists who participated in a training and calibration session. In the state, 62% of schoolchildren are eligible for the free/reduced lunch program (FRL); among students attending schools in the sample, 61% were eligible for FRL. The data were weighted to account for the survey design. Estimates were not adjusted for nonresponse.

Rhode Island

The survey was conducted during the 2007-2008 school year. The sampling frame consisted of all public elementary schools with at least 1 student in 3rd grade. The sampling frame was stratified by urban/non-urban status and percent of children that participate in the free/reduced school lunch (FRL) program. A probability sample of 33 elementary schools was selected, of which 31 agreed to participate. The screenings were completed using diagnostic criteria comparable to ASTDD's 1999 Basic Screening Survey. A combination of positive and passive consent was used with 66% of the enrolled children being screened. The percentage of children in the participating schools eligible for FRL was 46% while 41% of elementary school students in the sampling frame were eligible for FRL. The estimates presented are adjusted for the sampling scheme.

South Carolina

The survey was conducted during the 2007-2008 school year. The sampling frame consisted of all public elementary schools with 20 or more children enrolled in kindergarten and/or 3rd grade. A stratified probability sample of 73 schools was selected and all agreed to participate. The screenings were completed using diagnostic criteria comparable to ASTDD's 1999 Basic Screening Survey. Of the students selected, 43% responded. The percentage of participating children eligible for the free or reduced price lunch (FRL) program was 56% . Fifty-one percent of students in the state were eligible for FRL. The data were self-weighting and the estimates are not adjusted for nonresponse.

Texas

The survey was conducted during the 2007-2008 school year. The sampling design consisted of a random sample of public elementary schools with third grade students within each of the 4 following strata: border, non-border metropolitan, non-border suburban, and non-border rural. Seventy-one schools participated in the survey. All 3rd grade children who returned a positive consent form were eligible to participate. The statewide response rate was 51 percent. The survey followed the methods outlined in ASTDD's Basic Screening Survey. Six examiners were trained and calibrated. The data were weighted to account for the survey design and nonresponse.

Wisconsin

The survey was conducted during the 2007-2008 school year. The sampling frame consisted of all public elementary schools with 10 or more students enrolled in 3rd grade. A stratified probability sample of 114 schools was selected and 93 agreed to participate. Children were screened using a combination of positive and passive consent. The statewide response rate was 89%. The survey followed the methods outlined in ASTDD's Basic Screening Survey. In the state, 37% of schoolchildren are eligible for the free/reduced lunch program (FRL); among students attending schools in the sample, 36% were eligible for FRL. The data were weighted for the sampling scheme and adjusted for nonresponse.
