The National Preconception Curriculum and Resources Guide for Clinicians

Developed by the National Clinical Workgroup of the Preconception Health and Health Care Initiative, the Before and Beyond website offers numerous guidelines, publications and resources for healthcare providers interested in incorporating quality and efficient preconception care into their practices. Many resources on the website are also of value to public health professionals. The site includes recommendations from key publications and the complete content of several special journal issues on preconception health. Visitors to the site can also access copies of the Preconception Health and Health Care (PCHHC) e-newsletter and sign up to receive it directly.

The National Preconception/Interconception Care Clinical Toolkit

This toolkit was designed to help primary care providers, their colleagues and their practices incorporate preconception health into the routine care of women of childbearing age.  It addresses each woman’s needs based on the response to the “vital sign” question: “Are you hoping to become pregnant in the next year?” The toolkit then offers a wealth of information, including background, clinical guidance, clinical tools, risk reduction strategies, important talking points, patient resources, and references for ten major content areas. These include:

• Family Planning and Contraception
• Nutrition
• Infectious Disease and Immunizations
• Chronic Disease, Medication Use
• Substance Use
• Previous Pregnancy Outcomes
• Genetic History
• Mental Health History
• Intimate Partner Violence 

The toolkit includes information about reproductive life planning and a guide on how best use its content. The toolkit can be accessed at www.beforeandbeyond.org.

Continuing Education Modules

A popular resource on the beforeandbeyond.org site is the free continuing education modules. Three modules, created through a collaboration of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Center for Maternal and Infant Health and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, have recently been updated and reapproved for the American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award Category 1 Credit. The modules can be used for CME credit by physicians, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, and physicians’ assistants. The current modules are:

Module 1: Preconception Care: What It Is and What It Isn’t (1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit).

Module 2: Every Woman, Every Time: Integrating Health Promotion into Primary Care (1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit).

Module 3: Maximizing Prevention: Targeted Care for Those with High Risk Conditions (1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit).

New modules will continue to be added to the website.

Putting the QFP into Practice Series: Integrating Reproductive Life Planning (RLP) into Your Family Planning Session

This previously recorded webinar, offered by Family Planning National Training Centers, focuses on reproductive life planning. It discusses the purpose of the reproductive life plan in the family planning visit and integrates reproductive life planning into a family planning session in order to guide the provision of care.
