Performance and Accountability at CDC

The Performance and Accountability unit of PPEO supports and guides performance measurement and program monitoring, guides analysis and reporting of performance data in public reports and budget documents, and supports assessment of program effectiveness and impact. The Performance and Accountability unit coordinates the agency’s participation and leadership in several federal initiatives, programs and mandated reports including Healthy People 2020, HHS High Priority Goals, and the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA).
GPRA Reporting
The Government Performance and Results Act and subsequent GPRA Modernization Act require Cabinet-level agencies to publish a strategic plan, report publicly regarding a set of established performance measures for their programs, and establish and manage a small set of High Priority Goals. CDC/ATSDR meets these legal requirements through contributions to the:
- HHS Strategic Plan (FY 2014-2018)
- HHS Annual Performance Plan and Report (also known as the Online Performance Appendix) since FY 2013
- CDC Annual Report and Plan (also called the Online Performance Appendix) prior to 2013
Healthy People 2020
Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. CDC serves as a lead or co-lead for 30 of 42 Healthy People Topic Areas, and contributes to goals on tobacco consumption, patient safety, and food safety.
HHS High Priority Goals
HHS High Priority Goals are near-term results or achievements that leadership wants to accomplish within approximately 24 months. These goals rely predominantly on agency implementation as opposed to budget or legislative accomplishments.
