Miami Quarantine Station

Jurisdiction

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) operates a quarantine station in Miami. The station’s jurisdiction includes the preclearance ports in the Bahamas and Aruba; and all ports in Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Quarantine Station Activities

• Conduct surveillance for communicable diseases of public health importance at ports of entry in partnership with federal, state, and local port and public health officials and health care providers.
• Respond to reports of illness or death on airplanes and maritime vessels, and make public health assessments.
• Dispense immunobiologics and investigational drugs upon requests made to CDC.
• Inspect cargo and hand-carried items for potential vectors of communicable diseases.
• Partner with state and local public health department and port agencies in emergency response planning.
• Review medical records of migrants who will reside permanently in the United States. Notify state and local health departments of any migrants with specific medical conditions.
