If left untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhea infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility in women, and ectopic pregnancy. CDC works with state, local, and territorial STD prevention programs to conduct assessment of screening and laboratory services through surveillance and data management systems, as well as to assure provision of services for poor, uninsured women and their sexual partners by working with primary care providers in the community, including family planning clinics and community health centers.
CDC has a funding agreement with 59 state, local, and territorial STD programs to conduct infertility prevention activities through December 2013.
