Overview

NVSN was established to evaluate the impact of new vaccines and vaccine policies through active sentinel surveillance at three U.S. medical centers. The three charter sentinel sites are:

• University of Rochester (Rochester, NY)
• Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN)
• Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (Cincinnati, OH)

In 2009, NVSN was expanded to include the following sentinel sites:

• Texas Children’s Hospital (Houston, TX)
• Seattle Children’s Hospital (Seattle, WA)
• Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics (Kansas City, MO)
• Children’s Hospital and Research Center (Oakland, CA) (participant 2009-2016)

In 2016, NVSN added one additional site:

• Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC (Pittsburgh, PA)

As new vaccines are developed, licensed, and made available for use, surveillance and monitoring are critical to address their impact on communities and populations. NVSN supports broad-based surveillance and research projects for acute gastroenteritis and acute respiratory infections in areas with a population base of at least 500,000.
