History

The Emergency Medicine residency program has maintained Continued Full Accreditation by the ACGME as well as the Resident Review Committee (RRC) since 1981. It was the first EM residency program and first acsdemic department of Emergency Medicine in Vi5.

Their program proudly serves as a center of excellence in Emergency Medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia providing leadership in clinical, academic and prehospital services. They are a not-for-profit physician group supporting EVMS with more than 80 physicians at seven locations.

Their mission is to provide patient-centered, quality health care to the patients we serve. To that end, they strive to deliver care that is safe, efficient, cost-effective and timely. And EVMS emergency physicians are delivering this type of care more than 350,000 times a year.

Training Locations

Primary Hospital

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital A level 1 Trauma center and tertiary care referral center, with 640 beds. Serves as the primary training site for majority of EVMS residency programs.

Secondary Hospital

Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital

A busy community hospital within 10 minutes of the Atlantic Ocean, it serves as a level 2 Trauma center.

Tertiary Hospital

Sentara Obici Hospital

Fourth Hospital

Childrens Hospital of the Kings Daughter's.

The only dedicated pediatric hospital in the Commonwealth of Virginia. All pediatric rotations (ie, Emergency Medicine, PICU, pediatric anesthesia and sedation, etc) are completed at this facility.

Electives

Fellowships

Emergency Ultrasound: one year fellowship, gaining expertise and experience in all facets of bedside ultrasound. All graduates to date have gained RDMS certification. The fellowship started in 2009.

International Medicine: one year fellowship involving conference attendance, 3 to 4 months of overseas medical missions and asynchronous learning.
