History
The Emergency Medicine residency at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) was founded in 1972. It was the second emergency medicine residency program founded in the nation. The Emergency Department (ED) has more than 50 standard care rooms and 4 stabilization bays. There are > 100,000 patient presentations to the ED annually. There is a long history of bedside ultrasound at HCMC, starting in the mid 1980s. In addition to advanced bedside ultrasound imaging such as transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), the ED has many state-of-the-art bedside ultrasound machines including six Mindray M9, six Zonari ZS3, four touchscreen Mindray TE7, and two Toshiba Aplio with cardiac speckle tracking.
For Emergency Medicine, HCMC matches 12 categorical Emergency Medicine residents and 2 combined Emergency Medicine / Internal Medicine residents per year.
