Administration
- Type: Amebicide
- Routes of Administration: Oral
- Common Trade Names: Aloquin; Yodoxin
Adult Dosing
- 650mg 3 times daily after meals for 20 days
- Not to exceed 1.95 g daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Children: 30-40mg/kg daily (maximum: 650mg per dose) in 3 divided doses for 20 days
- Not to exceed 1.95 g daily
Special Populations
- Limited data on use during pregnancy
Renal Dosing
- No adjustments noted by manufacturer
Hepatic Dosing
- No adjustments noted by manufacturer
Contraindications
- Allergy to class/drug, hypersensitivity to iodine and/or 8-hydroxyquinolones
- Concerns with optic neuritis
- Concerns with peripheral neuropathy
- Hepatic impairment
- Renal impairment
- Chronic diarrhea, especially in children
Adverse Reactions
Serious
- Peripheral neuropathy, Long-term (high-dose)
- Optic atrophy, Long-term (high-dose)
- Optic neuritis, Long-term (high-dose)
Common
- Nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, cramps
- Fever/chills
- Pruritus, urticaria
- Headache, dizziness
Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action
- Contact amebicide that works in the lumen of the intestine (unknown mechanism)
