History

West Virginia University Emergency Medicine has a three-year, ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine Residency, founded in 1993. The program accepts 10 residents per incoming class. WVU Emergency Medicine residents train at three clinical sites, including WVU Medicine’s Ruby Memorial Hospital, United Hospital Center, and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

PGY1

  • EM—4 months (Primary Training Site-Ruby Memorial)
  • Community EM—1 month (Secondary Training Site—United Hospital Center)
  • Trauma—1 month
  • Pediatrics Month (PICU/Peds Wards/Peds Acute Care Clinic)—1 month
  • Cardiology/CCU—1 month
  • Internal Medicine Night Float—1 month
  • OB/GYN—1 month
  • Orthopedics—1 month
  • Anesthesia—1 month

PGY2

  • EM—6 ½ months (Primary Training Site—Ruby Memorial)
  • Community EM—2 months
  • EM Selective—1 month (resident choice of additional Ruby, UHC or St. Joes Rural EM month)
  • EM Radiology—2 weeks
  • MICU—1 month
  • SICU—1 month

PGY3

  • EM—6 months (Primary Training Site—Ruby Memorial)
  • Community EM—2 months
  • Elective—2 months
  • PICU—1 month
  • Flight and/or Ground EMS—1 month (opportunity for longitudinal inclusion)
