University Centers for Genomics and Public Health

In 2001, the CDC’s Office of Public Health Genomics (OPHG) collaborated with the Association of Schools of Public Health. Cooperative agreements were awarded to the Universities of Michigan, North Carolina, and Washington. The goal was to establish regional hubs of expertise in genomics and population health that built on and complimented existing university programs and partnerships with state and local health departments and other agencies and organizations. These partnerships would provide a foundation for a national network of resource centers that could develop the capacity for responding to future needs and opportunities related to genomics.

In 2005, OPHG continued funding two of the centers (Universities of Michigan and Washington) for their work in public health genomics. These centers help to facilitate the integration of genomics into public health by providing technical assistance and competency-based training, disseminating credible and impartial information, collaborating on CDC projects, such as the Evaluation of Genomic Applications in Practice and Prevention (EGAPP™)and the Family History Public Health Initiative, and collaborating with other public health agencies and partners about genomics and population-based activities.
