* Bed days are defined as days spent as an overnight patient in a hospital or days on which a person was kept in bed for more than half a day because of illness or injury.

In 2003, U.S. adults reported spending an average of 5 days in bed during the preceding 12 months because of illness
or injury. Younger adults had fewer bed days than older adults, and adults aged 18--44 years had the fewest bed days.
