QuickStats: Average Number of Days of Hospital Stay, by Age Group

During 1980--2004, the average length of a hospital stay declined significantly to 5.4 days for those aged 65--74 years,
5.7 days for those aged 75--84 years, and 5.8 days for those aged
>85 years. The average stay for patients aged <65 years was
4.3 days in 2004.
