QuickStats: Mean Gestational Age, by Plurality* --- United States, 2005
* Defined as the number of live births and stillbirths delivered in the pregnancy.
Shorter gestation is associated with poorer birth outcomes, long-term morbidity, and higher infant mortality
rates. The risk for shorter gestation is greater with multiple births than singleton births. In 2005, the mean gestational age
for singletons was 38.7 weeks, compared with 35.2 weeks for twins, 31.9 weeks for triplets, 29.8 weeks for quadruplets,
and 27.4 weeks for quintuplets and higher.
