Investigation Update on The World- February 23 , 2004

ResidenSea reported an increased number of cases of gastrointestinal (GI) illness on the cruise ship The World. It sailed from Cozumel, Mexico, on February 21, 2004 and was destined to arrive in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on February 24, 2004.

On February 23, 2004, ResidenSea contacted CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) staff to report that the number of The World crew with gastroenteritis illness symptoms had exceeded 2% of total crew members. On February 24, the ship’s medical staff reported that 0 of 68 (0.0%) passengers and 8 of 254 (3.14%) crew members were ill. Predominant symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea.

ResidenSea provided daily reports to VSP following the outbreak; the medical staff did not report any significant cases of illness. Stool specimens were not submitted.
