Windjammer Barefoot Cruises reported an increased number of cases of gastrointestinal illness on the cruise ship Legacy, which sailed from St. Thomas on January 4, 2004, and was destined for St. Thomas on January 10, 2004.
On January 9, 2004, Windjammer Cruises contacted CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) staff to report that the number of Legacy crew with gastroenteritis illness symptoms had exceeded 2% of total crew members. On January 9, the ship’s medical staff reported that no passengers and 2 of 46 (4.65%) crew members were ill. Predominant symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea.
Special daily reports were submitted to the Vessel Sanitation Program throughout the next cruise; no significant levels of GI illnesses were reported. Lab specimens were not submitted.
