Number of passengers who have reported being ill during the voyage out of total number of passengers onboard: 113 of 3,003 (3.76%)
Number of ill crew who have reported being ill during the voyage out of total number of crew onboard: 1,169 (1.71%)
Predominant symptoms: diarrhea and vomiting
Causative agent: Norovirus
Actions: In response to the outbreak, Carnival Cruise Line and the crew aboard the ship have taken the following actions:
- Increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan,
- Made announcements to both notify passengers and encourage case reporting
- Have additional nurses and a public health manager meeting the ship in New York
- Submitted to VSP their response and ship disinfection plans
- Collected 10 stool specimens for submission to the CDC lab
- Making twice daily reports of gastrointestinal illness cases to the VSP
One CDC Vessel Sanitation Program public health inspector will board the ship on arrival in New York to evaluate the outbreak and response activities as the ship sails without passengers to Norfolk, VA to begin the new sailing itinerary, starting on 17 October, 2010.
