Fellowship Program

The Fellowship Program enables CDC to encourage and promote scientific research, studies, training, and investigations related to public health as it relates to the mission of CDC. Eligible areas of health include basic and applied research in medical, physical, biological, mathematical, social, biometric, epidemiological, behavioral, and computer sciences, and other fields where the scientific research is directly related to the mission of CDC. Individuals eligible for Senior and Associate Service Fellowship programs may be U.S. citizens or noncitizens with permanent residency that are not civil service employees or commissioned corps officers.

 

 

Postdoctoral Research Program

The Postdoctoral Research Program provides opportunities for postdoctoral candidates of unusual promise and ability to conduct research in areas of their choosing that are compatible with the interests of NCHS. General areas of interest for research at NCHS include statistical theory, survey methodology, statistical computing, economics, demography, and social and behavioral science. This appointment is open to U.S. citizens or noncitizens with permanent residency and a valid work authorization.

 

Pathways Programs for Students and Recent Graduates

The Pathways Program is for students or recent college graduates that are looking for rewarding work experience to supplement their education. The Pathways Program is made up of three main components: the Internship Program that offers internship and summer employment opportunities to students; the Recent Graduates Program where recent college graduates can obtain enriching developmental work experience in public health and related support occupations; and the Presidential Management Fellows Program that offers leadership development opportunities to students who are completing their master’s, law, or doctoral-level degree within the academic year. Internship Program
The Internship Program is designed to provide current high school or college students with paid opportunities to gain work experience in agencies and explore federal careers. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for a permanent job in the civil service. Browse available internship opportunities.

 

Student Summer Employment
The Student Summer Employment program provides internship training and work experience for students during summer months. The work ranges from office support and trades to professional-level positions.

Eligibility
To participate in the Student Summer Employment program students must:

  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a diploma, certificate, or degree-seeking student. Verification showing enrollment status is required from the school.
  • Meet the minimum age required by federal, state, or local laws and standards governing the employment of minors.
  • Be carrying or scheduled to take a course load at least half-time at an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate, or professional school.

Pay and Benefits
Students in the Pathways receive a competitive salary, but are not eligible for federal benefits.

Student summer employment opportunities are announced January through March of each year. Visit the Pathways website beginning in January for more information on applying for summer employment with CDC. Detailed instructions on how to apply for student summer employment opportunities are provided during the announcement period.

Recent Graduates Program
The new Pathways Recent Graduates Program offers developmental experiences in the federal government in order to promote possible careers in civil service. To be eligible, applicants must apply within 2 years of degree or certificate completion from a qualifying educational institution or program. Veterans have up to 6 years after degree or certificate completion to apply. Browse available opportunities.

 

Presidential Management Fellows Program
The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is a 2-year, paid program designed to develop future leaders committed to excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs. The program is highly competitive, and candidates must be nominated by their graduate program’s dean, director, or chair. Candidates must have completed their master’s, law, or doctoral-level degree during this academic year.
