NHANES Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Fitness Data Tutorial

Navigate the NHANES Website

Purpose

The NHANES website will serve as an invaluable data and analytical resource as you proceed with your physical activity and cardiovascular fitness data analyses. Because the website contains previously published and current datasets covering a wide range of topics, it is important to learn how to navigate the site and how to use the resources included.

Task 1: Navigate the NHANES Homepage

Getting acquainted with the NHANES homepage will give you an appreciation for the number and diversity of materials available through the NHANES website.

Task 2: Find Datasets on the NHANES Website

All publicly available data and related documentation – including those for physical activity and fitness data – are released and updated on the NHANES website. Information on accessing non-publicly released data also is available on the NHANES website.

Task 3: Find Survey Background Information

Reviewing NHANES survey background information is an important step as you determine the scope of your analysis and identify variables to include.

Task 4: Find the Analytic and Reporting Guidelines

The Analytic and Reporting Guidelines should be used for NHANES data analyses and publications. The suggested guidelines give you a framework for producing estimates that conform to the analytic design of the survey.

Task 5: Use the What's New Page

The What’s New page is an important resource for staying updated with current information about the survey, including newly released data files. It’s a good idea to refer to this link periodically.

Task 6: Review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Page

The FAQs answer common questions about NHANES.

Task 7: Find Important NHANES Citations

NHANES researchers are often asked to cite the data source for their research proposals and related publications.

Task 8: Identify How to Get Help

The NHANES website has two useful resources for getting help: the NCHS email query and the NHANES listserv.
