The 2014 National Symposium on Corrections Worker Health - July 15, 2014 at Portland State University
Researchers and practitioners from the Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace, Oregon Healthy Workforce Center, Washington State University, University at Buffalo, Connecticut DOC, Oregon DOC, Washington State DOC, and other stakeholders will convene a National Symposium on Corrections Worker Health to be held on July 15, 2014 in Portland, Oregon to include a webcast for national outreach. The Oregon Healthy Workforce Center (ORhwc), along with the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences and the Oregon Public Health Division, will sponsor an all-day symposium on Sedentary, Stationary, and Physically Demanding Work: Health Consequences and Workplace Solutions. This event will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at the McMenamins-Kennedy School in Portland and is also available as a webinar. LCDR Heidi Hudson will be presenting 'Total Worker Health™: Rationale, Research and Practice' at the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Manufacturing Sector Council meeting on May 29, 2014 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her presentation will coincide with two case-study presentations by industry representatives on approaches toward integration and building cultures of workplace health. A group discussion will follow on how the principles of TWH can be applied in manufacturing settings.

On June 17, LCDR Heidi Hudson will present at NASA's Annual Occupational Health Conference at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL. Her presentation is titled, NIOSH Total Worker Health™: An Innovative Approach for Healthier Employees.

Alicia Kurowski, Sc.D., Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at The Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace (CPH-NEW), presented "Physical and psychosocial health effects of nursing home staff responsible for unpaid care work" at the 8th International Scientific Conference on Prevention of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (PREMUS), July 2013 in Busan, Korea.

Dr. Laura Punnett from The Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace (CPH-NEW) presented "Random effects models of back pain among nursing home workers" and "The impact of workplace factors on filing of workers' compensation claims by nursing home workers" at the 8th International Scientific Conference on Prevention of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (PREMUS) July 2013 in Busan, Korea.

Dr. Jennifer Hall, Outreach Director for the University of Iowa Healthier Workforce Center for Excellence, presented at a breakout session on "Creating a Healthy Workplace on a Limited Budget" and serve as a panelist addressing best practices at the upcoming Quad Cities Community Workplace Wellness Workshop on September 10, 2013 in Moline, IL.

Ms. Constance Franklin and Ms. Michelle Lee spoke at Cargill's Safety Leaders Conference in Peachtree City, GA on September 11, 2013 on the topic of "Eliminating Exposures Everyday."

Nicholas Warren, Sc.D., investigator at The Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace (CPH-NEW), will present "Ergonomics and Wellness Together: Tools and Resources for Total Worker Health" spoke at the 2nd Annual Wellness Conference of the Worksite Wellness Council of MA on September 17, 2013 in Westford, MA.

John Howard, MD, NIOSH Director, provided the opening special address "Worker Health = Economic Health" highlighting Total Worker Health at the 27th National Conference on Health, Productivity, and Human Capital hosted by the National Business Group on Health held from September 25 – 27, 2013 in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Kent Anger, Director of the Oregon Healthy Workforce Center, moderated the session "Total Worker Health" at the Western States Occupational Network (WestON) Sixth Annual Meeting in Golden, CO on September 26, 2013. Jim Merchant, Center Director of for the University of Iowa Healthier Workforce Center for Excellence, presented "Statewide Employer Survey Regarding Adoption of Elements of the IOM Employee Total Health Management Model" at the 141st American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting held November 2-5, 2013 in Boston, MA.

Ms. Chia-Chia Chang, NIOSH, presented "Total Worker Health: An Employer's Guide to Safety, Health, Wellness and Overall Employee Well-being" via a Corporate Research Group webinar from 2:00pm –3:15pm EDT on November 21, 2013.

Ms. Chia-Chia Chang, NIOSH, will spoke at the 2013 Professional Development Seminar of the National Capital Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), Potomac Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), and the George Washington School of Public Health and Health Services on November 21, 2013 in Washington, D.C. on the topic of integrating safety, health, and well-being.

Dr. Laura Punnett, CPH-NEW codirector, was a guest speaker with Dr. Ron Goetzel for the NIOSH TWH webinar "Making the Case for Total Worker Health: An Overview of Opportunities and Approaches". Cohosted by NIOSH and CPH-NEW, the webinar included an overview of TWH, evidence for the TWH approach, and a discussion of the organizational benefits to integrating wellness and workplace safety programs. Dr. Jennifer Hall, HWCE Associate Director for Outreach, presented "A Total Worker Health Approach to Health and Wellness for Safety and Profitability" at the 65th Annual Iowa Ready Mix Concrete Association Convention, in Bettendorf, IA, on March 10. LCDR Heidi Hudson and Ms. Michelle Lee led a workshop titled "Total Worker Health: Let's Get Started!" and presented on the topics of "Maximizing the Health of an Aging Workforce" and "Integrating Safety with Workplace Wellness" at the Spring Conference of the Florida Local Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. The conference took place in Jacksonville, FL, on March 26–28.

LCDR Heidi Hudson provided two 1-hour workshops on how to apply the principles and practices of Total Worker Health, to regional workplace safety and health practitioners at the BJC Worksite Wellness Summit on April 10 in St. Louis, MO.

Dr. L. Casey Chosewood delivered the keynote presentation to stakeholders and have discussions with collaborators on improving worker health, safety, and well-being by using the principles and practices of the NIOSH Total Worker Health Program, at Med-1 Occupational Health System's "Best Practices in Occupational Medicine" Symposium.
