John P. Murphy, MBA

Management Officer

Mr. John Murphy serves as Management Officer for the Office of the Associate Director for Science (OADS) at CDC. He is a member of the Office’s senior staff. He is responsible for management and administrative functions of the Office, supporting the needs of OADS division-level offices, for special projects of interest to the Associate Director and Deputy, and for maintaining strong rapport and reporting channels to management officials within the Office of the Director.

Mr. Murphy spent over six years in the Division of Parasitic Diseases before coming to OADS. He was responsible for administration and management functions for his branch and served as deputy chief. He provided programmatic support for disease elimination projects and outbreak investigations. He was project officer for a number of cooperative agreements, CRADA, and Inter-Agency Agreements. He served on details to the SARS and Monkey Pox response teams.

Before joining CDC, Mr. Murphy worked 10 years in the private sector. His roles ranged from direct sales to management. He worked for Scholastic Book Fairs as Manager of Materials and Special Projects for six years. He thoroughly enjoyed his role in bringing the joy of reading to youngsters. He was responsible for executing an annual operations budget of over $13M.

Mr. Murphy’s first career began at age 17 when he joined the U. S. Army. He served in a number of grades as an enlisted soldier, and also as a commissioned officer. He spent over 10 years overseas, including Germany and Vietnam. He served in a number of units, some popularized by motion pictures, including 5th Special Forces Group and 1st Infantry Division. He retired as a lieutenant colonel with 22 years of service.

Mr. Murphy has an MBA from Florida Institute of Technology. His son John lives in Knoxville with wife Katie, daughter Maddy, and son JJ. His daughter Julie lives in Pittsburgh.
