PFAS Continuing Education for Clinicians

Per- and polyfluoroakyl substances, or PFAS, are a growing topic of interest in the United States.  Recently, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a new lifetime health advisory level for PFAS in water. This led to discovery of widespread contamination of water systems which exceeded this new value. PFAS are classified as emerging contaminants which are characterized by “a perceived, potential, or real threat to human health or the environment or by a lack of published health standards”.  These chemicals are ubiquitous in a variety of environments, and >95% of people in the US have measurable amounts of PFAS present in their body. With this widespread exposure, it is necessary that clinicians are well-informed to handle concerns of communities where contamination has occurred. This presentation is designed to assist clinicians by offering peer-reviewed, up-to-date literature about PFAS, the known and potential health effects associated with PFAS exposure, and information on how to address potential patient concerns following exposure to PFAS. This presentation is available for Physicians, Nurses, Other Health Professionals, and Certified Public Health Professionals continuing education.

At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe characteristics of PFAS.
2. Identify uses of PFAS
3. Explain the relationship of cancer to PFAS
4. Identify routes of exposure for PFAS
5. Describe Reproductive effects of PFAS
6. Identify pregnancy outcomes associated with PFAS exposure.
7. Explain how to address a patient’s concerns about breastfeeding after exposure to PFAS.
8. Describe when blood testing is appropriate after potential exposure to PFAS
