Transmission
Heartland virus belongs to the genus Phlebovirus, which includes viruses that can be transmitted by ticks, mosquitoes, and sandflies. Recent studies have shown that the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum) can transmit the virus.
It is not known if other species of ticks might also transmit the virus.
