Environmental Chemical Data Overview

Purpose

This module provides an overview of the complexities of the environmental chemical data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) by briefly describing the history of the environmental chemical data collection, the methodology for collecting the data, and the uses of the data.

Task 1: Describe the History of Environmental Chemical Data Collection in NHANES

The environmental chemical data has been an integral part of NHANES for more the 30 years beginning with NHANES II (1976-80). This task will provide a brief historical perspective on environmental chemical data in NHANES.

Task 2: Describe NHANES Environmental Chemical Data Collection Methods

The environmental chemical data are part of the larger collection of laboratory nutritional biochemistries and hematological indicators. This task will describe the type of specimens collected for the environmental chemicals discussed in the tutorial.

Task 3: List the Public Health Uses of NHANES Environmental Chemical Data

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other Federal agencies, as well as, a wide range of researchers, are major users of NHANES environmental chemical data. This task will list some of the objectives for the environmental chemical data.
