Job Description
As a Health Scientist (Inspector), you will:
- Conduct on-site inspections that include Biosafety Level (BSL) 2, 3, and/or 4, and Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL) 2, 3, and/or 4, facilities registered under the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 42, Part 73 at various locations in the United States.
- Prepare written compliance reports of inspection findings based upon regulatory requirements.
- Facilitate the registrations of entities that possess, use and/or transfer select agents and toxins and review applications from entities required to register.
- Provide training on all aspects of 42 CFR Part 73 and/or 42 CFR Part 71.54 to internal and external audiences.
- Respond to emergencies involving select agents and toxins.
- Develop operation and policy decisions, standard operating procedures, and guidance materials.
- Communicate specific compliance-related requirements to the regulated community (federal, state and local public health laboratories; private industry; and private and public universities).
Qualification Requirements
Basic Qualifications:
Degree: A full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher with major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.
In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, applicants must meet the specialized experience as stated below.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.
Specialized experience is experience at or equivalent to which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience inspecting and identifying laboratory safety and establishing biosafety approaches for Biosafety Level (BSL) 4 laboratories.
Foreign Education: Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
