• Overall, there were 569,366 invasive lung cancer cases among men in the United States from 2005–2009.
• Overall, there were 485,027 invasive lung cancer cases among women in the United States from 2005–2009.
• The age groups with the highest number of cases for both men and women were the 55–64, 65–74 and 75 and older age groups.
  
  

Average annual rates of lung cancer cases in the United States from 2005–2009

• Overall, the average annual rate of invasive lung cancer cases among men was 82.9 per 100,000 people.
• Overall, the average annual rate of invasive lung cancer cases among women was 55.7 per 100,000 people.
• The annual percentage change among men was -2.6%.
• The annual percentage change among women was -1.1%.
  
  

State and regional data on invasive lung cancer cases in the United States from 2005–2009

• Lung cancer incidence among men decreased by a statistically significant extent in all U.S. Census regions and in 23 states.
• Lung cancer incidence among women decreased by a statistically significant extent in the South and West U.S. Census regions and in 7 states.
• Lung cancer incidence among men decreased most in the Midwest Census region, 2.9%.
• Lung cancer incidence among women decreased most in the West region, 1.8%.
