Strategic Focus

The CDC-Vietnam office was established in 1998. CDC-Vietnam focuses its efforts on high prevalence provinces and works in partnership with the Government of Vietnam (GVN) to support targeted programming for most-at-risk populations, which include people who inject drugs, commercial sex workers, and men who have sex with men.

Strengthening Laboratory Systems and Networks
CDC-Vietnam supports GVN in developing sustainable infrastructures to accurately and efficiently diagnose, stage, and monitor HIV treatment. These activities include the evaluation of rapid HIV testing technologies for same day results, developing a CD4 testing network, expanding viral load testing capacity, and HIV drug resistance monitoring. CDC-Vietnam also supports better lab data management through electronic lab information systems, lab management training, strategic planning, and developing and updating national testing guidelines.

Developing Surveillance and Health Information Systems
CDC-Vietnam builds in-country capacity to design, implement, and evaluate surveillance systems. It also improves the ability of broader national health information systems to collect, store, analyze, and use high-quality data that is essential to HIV prevention, care, and treatment programs. CDC-Vietnam works with national Vietnamese universities and institutes to strengthen pre- and in-service training in core public health areas related to surveillance, applied epidemiology, biostatistics, informatics, and data use.

Maximizing Impact Through Injection Drug User-targeted Interventions
CDC-Vietnam works with GVN to develop programs targeting current and recovering drug users, including risk reduction interventions, medication-assisted therapy, other addiction recovery support, and critical HIV/AIDS interventions like the provision of antiretroviral therapy.
