What We Do

HIV

In 2013, CDC launched the Botswana Combination Prevention Project (BCPP) in partnership with the Botswana Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Harvard School of Public Health. The focus of the study is to evaluate whether coordinated and strengthened HIV interventions are a cost-effective way to prevent new HIV infections and save lives. Botswana also provides assistance to the Option B+ program that prevents mother-to-child transmission (PMCTC) of HIV.

TB

CDC-Botswana is partnering with the Government of Botswana, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of KwaZulu Natal (South Africa), to conduct a multi-year study focusing on TB transmitted in Botswana in an effort to control the spread of the disease. CDC-Botswana, St. George’s Hospital, and the Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom have collaborated to conduct the RIFAQUIN trial which researches the efficacy of high dose combinations of TB meds to address drug-resistant strains. In addition, CDC-Botswana has partnered with the MOH and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to establish the BOTUSA project, which strengthens TB control programs and reduces co-infection rates of TB and HIV/AIDS.
