Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore City Public Schools in Maryland receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to collect and report Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and School Health Profiles data.
Boston, Massachusetts
Boston Public Schools receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to:
- Collect and report Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and School Health Profiles data.
- Deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE).
Boston Public Schools is working toward these goals in the following ways:

- Helping school wellness councils support teachers and staff as they implement sexual health education.
- Training school staff on its youth sexual health referral guide and referral system, improving youth access to health services.
- Helping school wellness councils assess school environments and working with councils to develop gay-straight alliances. This work provides safe and supportive school environments for students and staff.
Broward County, Florida
School Board of Broward County receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to:
- Collect and report Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and School Health Profiles data.
- Deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE). Implement multiple program activities to meet the HIV/STD prevention needs of young men who have sex with men (YMSM).
Broward County Public Schools is working toward these goals in the following ways:

- Training schools’ staff to provide a sexual health education curriculum for middle and high school students. In addition, Broward is providing training on a district sexual health policy adopted in 2015 to improve school staff effectiveness.
- Developing a system to link students to youth-friendly health care providers, increasing the number of students who access needed sexual health services.
- Working to ensure that the district’s black and Latino male gay and bisexual students are receiving quality sexual health education in a meaningful and appropriate manner.
- Supporting a variety of programs to ensure safe and supportive environments for its black and Latino male gay and bisexual students. These programs include school health events and district-wide campaigns. Broward also involves youth with sexual health services assessment; youth verify that providers listed in the resources guide are welcoming to black and Latino male gay and bisexual teens.

- Training sexual health education instructors to teach age-appropriate, medically accurate and unbiased curricula; also providing instructor training support and parent resources, tools and informational sessions.
- Partnering with multiple organizations, school based health centers, and mobile providers to ensure its students have access to sexual health services. The district works with the health department to provide STD-related resources and is developing a youth-friendly list of health services providers.
- Promotes a safe and supportive environment for all students through school-based Youth Wellness Teams and participating in the “OUT for Safe Schools” campaign to help school staff create a welcoming environment.
Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland Metropolitan School District receives funding for CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to:
- Collect and report Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and School Health Profiles data.
- Deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE).
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is working toward these goals in the following ways:

- Assessing the quality of its sexual health education programs; results will improve sexual health curriculum and determine the skills that staff need to teach it effectively.
- Developing materials that describe “teen friendly” health services in the community, making it easier for students to access needed health services. The materials specifically address LGBTQ students to try and increase their comfort in seeking out health services.
- Working with local community organizations to provide information on creating safe spaces, to help staff create school environments where all staff and students feel respected and welcome. The district also helps parents to learn how to be supportive of all students, including addressing bullying.

The District of Columbia Public Schools receive funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to deliver exemplary sexual health education emphasizing HIV and other STD prevention (ESHE); increase adolescent access to key sexual health services (SHS); and establish safe and supportive environments for students and staff (SSE).
DC Public Schools is working toward these goals in the following ways:

- Hosting parent sexual health education workshops throughout the district to increase parent support and engagement.
- Collaborating with the state education agency to develop, market and distribute the Healthy Youth Resource Guide for schools, community-based organizations and clinical providers. The guide will help students readily access services that decrease the likelihood of infection with HIV or other STDs.
- Working with a national organization to disseminate the district’s new policy on Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Students to district administrators, school leaders, school liaisons and other support staff, which supports a safe and supportive school environment. The district also provides training on bullying prevention strategies.

- Revising the sexual health education components of its curriculum and offering professional development on sexual health education implementation, instructional models, and media resources.
- Identifying youth-friendly community health service providers within the school communities with the help of the HIV Community Planning Group and a youth task force; marketing and distributing a school community resource guide; and collaborating with school-based health centers and the district’s Health and Medical Services Department to raise awareness.
- Working with several partners to promote school connectedness, parent engagement and provide student leadership trainings, including strengthening Gay Straight Alliances within its schools, as well as implementing anti-bullying and anti-sexual harassment policies, and addressing the overall needs of its LGBT youth.
Los Angeles, California
The Los Angeles Unified School District receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to:

The Los Angeles Unified School District is working toward these goals in the following ways:

- Providing sexual health education training to schools’ staff to increase the number of students throughout the district who receive quality sexual health education.
- Implementing an updated student referral system to appropriate sexual health services both within and outside of the school district, helping to ensure the needs of LGBTQ youth are addressed.
- Working closely with internal partners to review bullying and harassment policies, helping determine how these policies promote school environments where all students feel safe and respected
- Updating current sexual health education resources, including adding a toolkit with LGBTQ information for staff, and resources for black and Latino male gay and bisexual students.
- Implementing activities that reflect new, teen-based technologies including a pilot tablet program and a Yelp-like rating to find appropriate sexual health services. Services include those that meet the needs of the district’s black and Latino male gay and bisexual students.

The San Francisco Unified School District is working toward these goals in the following ways:

- Working with local community organizations to design, review, and implement the district’s sexual health education curriculum.
- Providing monthly gatherings for its schools’ wellness teams, local teen clinic staff, and other local community organization staff, coordinating work that increases students’ knowledge of and access to area sexual health services.
- Sponsoring a day-long event (Gay-Straight Alliance Day) for its middle and high schools, with students teaching other youth how and where to access community sexual health services.
- Training selected high school students to provide the broader student population with HIV/STD prevention and sexual health presentations focusing on black and Latino male gay and bisexual teens.
- Working with community partners to review the district’s health services referral system
- Developing male student health groups to enable dating, relationship, and sexual health discussions in a safe environment supported by district staff.

Shelby County Schools is working toward these goals in the following ways:

- Reviewing and revising its sexual health education curriculum using DASH’s Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool. The district is also providing curriculum training to school staff.
- Compiling a list of school-based health centers, community-based clinics, and Shelby County Health Department clinics that provide sexual health services to distribute to adolescents and developing a referral system. This will help schools and community health care providers improve student access to needed services.
- Working with alternative schools to link students to service learning and mentoring. The district is also working with school staff to address bullying, sexual harassment, and electronic aggression.
