- Rachel Stricof, MPH, CIC, Director, New York State Health Department Bureau of Healthcare-Associated Infections, representing the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE)
Why:
CDC is releasing a report detailing state-specific and national central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) data using the standardized infection ratio (SIR) calculation. This report is the first to assign a national CLABSI SIR and the first to include any state-specific information. The report includes only states that require reporting of CLABSIs to CDC's healthcare-associated infection monitoring system, the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), and compares national and state data from January – June 2009 with national data from 2006-2008. This report provides baseline measurements that can guide state prevention activities. In addition, this report represents a first step in monitoring national progress toward the CLABSI prevention goals in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Action Plan to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections.
Healthcare-associated infections are a significant burden in the United States, associated with approximately 99,000 deaths and up to $30 billion each year.
